Best TV Series for Women to Watch During Social Distancing
Editor: Anita Newkirk Hackney
Television is an escape from Covid-19, de-maskers and the chaotic presence in the Oval Office. So, why not watch some TV shows and rekindle with the visual opulence on the screen?
TV shows are becoming more and more liberal with their showings. Shows like Girlboss, The Bold Type, The Baby-Sitters Club, and Trinkets have characters from the LGBTQ community and a strong female character (or characters) in their programming.
These four television series for women are worth watching while social distancing:
Girlboss
Girlboss is a stylized version of the true story of Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Gal and how she started her business. Girlboss airs on Netflix and tells the story of how Sophia Amoruso, a dirt-bag hipster, turned selling clothes on eBay into the multimillion-dollar fashion label company, Nasty Gal.
The Bold Type
The Bold Type is a TV series on Hulu following the experiences of three friends and their co-workers at the global women’s magazine, Scarlet. This series talks about issues rarely touched on TV shows like breast cancer, xenophobia, homophobia, and systemic racism. Unlike other television shows, The Bold Type weaves a web of stories that explore self-expression, sexuality, freedom, and equality.
Trinkets
Trinkets is a two-season, teen drama series on Netflix based on a 2013, novel by Kristen Smith. The book and the series are told from Elodie Davis’s point-of-view. Elodie, a grieving teen, finds an unexpected connection between two classmates at her new high school after they all end up in the same Shoplifters Anonymous group. Elodie, Tabitha and Moe’s characters grow throughout the series, standing up for each other and really have each other’s backs. Like The Bold Type, this series goes over issues rarely touched on TV like systemic racism and abuse.
The Baby-Sitters Club
The Baby-Sitters Club is a Netflix television show based on a children’s book series by Ann M. Martin. The show follows a group of friends who run a babysitting service called “The Baby-Sitters Club”. Throughout the show, each character face trials and tribulations which build their skills as baby-sitters and builds them in the process.
Due to the coronavirus, TV series are a much needed escape from reality during these trying times. TV shows like The Bold Type, The Baby-Sitters Club and Trinkets have changed the voice of television as the public knows it. These three series deal with issues rarely mentioned on television like the LGBTQ community, abuse, racism, xenophobia, and neglect. This shows television is changing to satisfy the audience’s realistic and diverse nature.
